Uchi Pillaiyar Temple:

Ucchi Pillaiyar Temple is a 6th or 7th century hindu temple,dedicated to Lord Ganesha located at top rockfort,Trichy. The main deity is Lord Pillaiyar.The sthala theertam is Cauvery. The puja performed here are according to the Sivagama puja rules.It is a hill cave temple.The hill is 275 feet tall. There are 417 steps to reach the hill and the beautiful mandapam in the temple has 1000 pillars where weddings are conducted.This hill fort temple was built during the rule of Mahendra Pallava-Gunaparan.
The Thayumanavar temple at the foot hill is one of the celebrated Shiva temple of the state praised in Thevaram hymns. Gnanasambandar, Appar, Manickavasagar, Thayumana Swamigal had sung the story of this sacred land. The hill construction is such a eye-treat because of its marvellous architechture.

History of the temple:

Very thought of Trichy brings before our eyes are Lord Pillaiyar,River Cauvery,Sri Rangam pleasing our soul.The history goes like this,Once Lord Sri Rama returned Ayodhya after rescuing Mother Sita from the captivity of Ravana along with Sri Sugriva,Sri Hanuman and Sri Vibishna to participate in the coronation function of the Lord.While returning back with gift of Sri Ranganatha idol from Sri Rama,Vibishana came south.Seeing the beauty of River Cauvery and the scenic environment he wanted to relax for while.Devas doesn't want Vibishana to take Sri Ranganatha idol to home appealed to Lord Shiva.He sent Lord Vinayaga to stop Vibishana.When Vibishana was relaxing,Lord Vinayaga who was in guise of little boy was sitting on the hill.Vibishana asked the little boy to take care of the gift,idol of Sri Ranganatha.Afrer waiting for Vibishana the little boy placed the idol on ground and hid himself in the hill.Vibishana who returned back was shocked to see the boy was missing and idol on ground.He applied all his energy to move the idol but failed.Thus Sri Ranganatha bound to Srilanka cut short his journey and chose Sri Rangam as his abode.Seeing the boy on the top of the hill Vibishana hit him on head,scar of which is still visible on Lord Vinayaga's idol.Lord Vinayaga along with Sri Ranganatha nearby is ruling us gracefully.

Festivals:

Abishegam is offered to Lord Vinayaga with milk and garlands made of holy grass called Arugampul.Fifteen days Chithirai(April-May)car festival is celebrated.12 days of Theppa festival in the month Panguni(March-April),Summer festival on the hills during Vaikasi (May-June),Navarathri during Puratasi month,Skandha shashti in Aipasi and thirteen days Vinayagar Chathurthi festival celebrated grandly.Also Aadipooram,Tamil & English newyear,Diwali,Pongal days are celebrated with special pujas.
