Vadapalani Murugan Temple | Arulmigu Vadapalani Andavar kovil

Sri Vadapalani Andavar:

     Lord Murugan,the god of beauty,truth and knowledge and also known as 'Tamizh Kadavul'.Sri Vadapalani Andavar temple is located at Vadapalani the heart of Chennai city.This temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan.It is said that the temple is built 125 years back and was renovated in 1920s.It was the period, the Rajagopuram of the temple was built.Lord Murugan sannidhi emerged from a thatched shed.The main deity of the temple Lord Murugan resembles the Palani Andavar in every aspect.The main speciality of the temple is Lord Murugan graces with his Padukkas-Chappals.As Lord Murugan is the deity of planet Mars,a special shrine for the planet is found in the temple.The temple has Golden Ratha which is marvellous to watch.



History & Overview:

    According to the sthalapurana,one of the Lord Murugan devotee named Annaswami Nayakar with his limited means built a small thatched hut and kept Lord Murugan painting for his personal worship.During his meditation and worship some divine power entering his body and made him to utter some mysterious things which were true.His utterance went by the name of Arulvakku(God blessed Statements) and relieved people from evil things.This is the place were now the temple is situated.
    Apart from the main deity Lord Murugan,other deities present here are Varasiddhi Vinayagar,Chokkanathar,Meenakshi Amman,Kala Bhairavar,Shanmuga with his consorts Valli and Deivanai,Hanuman.Also a spacious hall is used for conducting marriages and religious discourses.Around 7000 couples a year are getting married here.This temple is one of the most frequented Murugan shrines in the city of Chennai.The entrance of the temple is crowned with the Rajakopuram with several images depicting legends from Skandhapuranam.Also 108 Bharathanatyam dance gestures can be seen on eastern tower as well.The sthala theertha is found in front of the temple called Tirukulam.

      Five kala puja is observed called Palliyarai puja @ 5.30am,Kala Shanti puja @ 6.30am,Uchi kala puja @ 12pm,Sayaraksha puja @ 5pm and Arthajama puja @ 9pm.The festivals celebrated grandly here are Chithirai Tamil newyear (April 14),Chithirai Poornima - fullmoon day in April-May,Eleven days procession festival in connection with Vaikasi Visakam(May-June),Six days Aipasi Skandha Shashti in October - November and Panguni Kruthika Laksharchana in March - April with three days float festival.
