Varalakshmi Puja And Its Importance | Why and How To Perform Varalakshmi Vratam



As we say Varalakshmi puja alias Varalakshmi Vratam, it is an important ritual performed by all married women in south India and Maharashtra. This Puja is mainly performed for the prosperity and well being of families. The long waited varalakshmi puja is arriving tomorrow (AUGUST 12 OF 2016). This time Varalakshmi puja is falling on the day of friday. Generally preparation for all these pooja are done on the day before that is on Thrusday evening. 

Deevotees who are performing this puja will wake up earlier in the morning, they take bath and prepare with the kalasham. Pooja is usually done in the early morning that is preferablly in BHRAMA MUKURTHAM. People avoid doing puja at RAGHU KALAM. The designated pooja will take place usually at home which is cleaned well and rangoli will be done in the place of puja. 

Moving on to the main part of puja is KALASHAM PREPARATION usually it is done with bronze or silver pot. The pot is filled with water or rice and a swastika symbol is drawn on the pot. Few other items used to fill pot are single whole lime, clove, coin, beetle nut. other items used for decorating the pot vary from region to region. Few people place mirror at the back side of pot. They also include comb, mirror, turmeric, small black bangles and few black beads too. 

The kalasham is filled up to the neck and it is sometimes covered with yellow cloth and now the kalasham is fully done which represents the goddess Lakshmi. Now a days varalakshmi pots are available at markets. The kalasham is placed on bed of rice on plates on the very beginning of pooja lord Ganesha puja is performed and then begins the varalakshmi pooja.

During varalakshmi puja devotee sings slokhas dedicated to godess lakshmi aarathi is performed to the kalasham and diffrent types of sundal , sweets and pongal are offred to goddess lakshmi. The deeotee who is observing varalkashmi puja will restrain themselves from eating few food and this varies from region to region. In certain places women will fast untill the puja is over. 

On that particular day thamboolam is given to other married women along with beetle leaf, tumeric, kum kum and few black beads. once the evening aarathi is over the kalasham is kept at the same place for whole night and on very next day the kalasham is taken out and water is sprinkled all over the home and rest are poured to a plant. The rice bed mixed along with other rice at home. Any simple prayer will even please goddess lakshmi.

AUSPICIOUS TIME TO PERFORM VARALAKSHMI PUJA:

Raghu kalam is an in auspicious time to perform this puja so 10.30 to 12 is not recommended to perform this puja. usually auspicious time for puja is evening or early morning BHRAMA MUKURTHAM. 

SOME COMMON DOUBTS THAT ARE CLARIFIED FOR SAKE OF PUJA:

Preganant ladies are not insisted to take up fasting on this particular day. 

Any type of sundal can be taken as food on this particular day

In particular region green bananas are not cooked on this particular day.
