History:

When a Maha Pralayam took place, all the creatures of earth were destroyed and the AmudaKalasam(contains seeds for the new world) prepared by Lord Brahma kept in the peak of Mount Meru - Himalayas also got displaced and settled in Kumbakonam by streaming in the river. It is believed that When Lord Shiva incarnated himself as a Kirata Murthy(Hunter) and hit this Kalasa with his arrow, the life in earth bloomed again. The broken pieces from the Kalasa emerged as Lingas and Later became Temples.
This temple holds the history where Lord Shiva broke this kalasa with his arrow. Associated with the history of Kumbam, by which the spot has got its name (Baanam means Arrow), Banapureeswarar Temple must be a wishlist on every individual who visits Kumbakonam for dharshan.

Vyasa Lingam:

This Lord is also named Vyasa Lingam as Sage Vyasa had prayed here. When Vyasa was cursed by Nandeeswarar and as prompted by Ganapathy, Vyasa visited this place, venerated the Lord and got relieved from his sin. ( This story is portrayed in the sudhai design in the gopuram). Additionally, there was a King in Bengal by name Surasenan. His wife Kanthimathi had some severe disease for which the specialists couldn't offer any treatment. He counseled his Kula Guru Soothaka Rishi and as prompted by him, came here and adored the Lord and the Mother Somakalambal and his wife got recovered. She was also blessed with a child. Consequently there is a nearby conviction that on the off chance that one adores the Amman here, he will emerge from all the mental illness and will feel enlightened.

Pulikaal Munivar:

This temple is additionally connected with Sage Vyakrapathar ( Pulikkal Munivar in Tamil ). Initially the sage was having legs like other humans. He was prone to go into the wild forest and carry flowers for performing Pooja to the Lord. He was pained by the wild creatures in the forest. He at that point asked the Lord to give him the legs of a tiger so he could continue his rituals without any hindrance and he got blessed with the same. Consequently he came to be known as Pulikkal Munivar.
