Arulmigu Vazhuvur Veerateeswarar Temple Details
The Viratteswara Temple is situated in the town of Vazhuvur, 5 miles southwest of Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, India. The Presiding deity is Gajasamharamurti and Goddess Balagurambikai. She is also called Ilankilai Nayagi. There is a separate shrine for Saneeswarar as Vickrama Chola got cured by worshipping Lord Saneeswarar here. This great temple is one of Ashta Veeratta Stalam.
Sthala Purana / History of The Temple:
Once,48000 saints requested Brahma to allocate a place for performing Tapas. Brahma said he will throw a ring made of Dharba leaf and the landing place will be the place for performing tapas and will be named Tharugavanam. After performing tapas, the rishis thought that the world is operating because of them also the lady rishi pathinis also thought the same. To demolish this arrogance, Lord Shiva incarnated as Pichandavar and Lord Vishnu as Mohini.
Pichandavar went to Rishi Pathini's place and Mohini went to the place of Rishis. Everyone dissolved their tapas as they were addicted to the beauty of Pichandavar and Mohini. The rishis got angry and they performed Abitchara Homam and they launched deer, snake and fire on Pichandavar. All these changed into a weapon in the hands of Lord Shiva. Finally, they launched an elephant on Lord Shiva but he made the elephant disappear. The elephant injured the rishis and after this, the rishis prayed Lord Shiva. He went inside the elephant. The elephant was named Kirthivasan. As soon as Lord Shiva went inside the elephant, the world turned dark. Meantime Lord Shiva tore the elephant and came out.
Since the ignorance for all the 48000 rishis were removed and wisdom was given by Lord Shiva, the lord was named Sri Ganasabeshwarar. The house is called as wisdom house(Gnanasabai). SInce lord shiva performed valour dancing the lord is also called Veerateshwarar(Valour Eeshwarar). Since the lord tore the elephant he is also called Gajasamhara Moorthy.
Since 48000 saints performed Abitchara Homam they are cursed. To redress this lord shiva told the saints to worship 1008 shiva temples in 48 days. Since they were unable to do it they made the image of 1008 linga and erected it in the temple as a separate shrine as Sahasra Lingam.
Worships and Benefits:
Behind this Lord, there is a secret yantra, if devotees view the aarathi taken for the yantra we will get many benefits like relief from witchcraft, relief from marriage ban, child gratification, work development, education development.
If the devotees take bath in the Pancha Brahma Theertham and take round the Peepal tree their barriers for marriage will be removed and child gratification will be given.

The temple is open from 6 am to 12 Noon and 4 pm to 8 pm.
How to reach:
Vazhuvur is very close to Mayiladuthurai, which is the nearest major town. And the nearest railway status is Kuthalam which is approximately 1 km away from the village. People who travel by express trains should disembark at Mayiladuthurai and take the road to reach Vazhuvur.
