Jambukeswarar Temple Sembakkam | Lord Shiva Temple In Sembakkam

Sembakkam Jambukeswarar Temple Details

The Jambukeswarar Temple, devoted to Lord Shiva is situated in Sembakkam, near Thiruporur. The Managing Deities are Lord Jambukeswarar and Goddess Azhagambikai.

When Lord Muruga killed Soorapadman during Soora Samharam, the head of the evil spirit have fallen here and thus the spot was known as Sirampakkam (Siram implies Head in Thamizh). It is said that the name Sirampakkam got changed to Sembakkam later. Indeed, even today, the flag-raising ritual of Thiruporur Sri Kandhaswamy temple is finished by the people of Sembakkam during the yearly Brahmotsavam celebration.

History / Story of The Temple

Two Shiva Ganas took birth as elephants and insects (subsequent to being reviled) are said to have revered the Lord here as a Lingam under a Jambu tree. The insect used to assemble a web over the Lingam to shield it from direct daylight and falling leaves. The elephant adored it by getting water in its trunk and pouring over the Shiva Lingam. During this, the elephant was used to annihilate the cobweb. The insect bitterly one day chomped the elephant inside its trunk while the elephant whipped its trunk to kill the arachnid. Both passed on in the conflict yet Lord Shiva conceded Moksha (freedom) to the two of them because of their reverential administrations. Devi Parvati (as Akhilandeswari) is also said to have adored Lord Shiva here as Jala (Lingam made of water).

In those days, a group of sages used to go around for Shiva worship by walk and they apply Viboothi all around the body before Gurus or Lord Shiva just in holy spots and offer prayers. They won't do it in any common spot. When they were searching for one such spot around this place, a blessed voice guided them here. There is a conviction that these sages are adoring the Lord here even today. The pooja sound is heard during the midnights even now only to the specific spiritual devotees.

Significance of Sembakkam

The place once had 32 roads, 32 Vinayagar temples and 32 ponds yet presently have about
23 roads, 23 Vinayagar temples, and 7 or 8 ponds.
For the most part, the temple will be there amidst a town/Town yet here temple is available on each road, indeed two Vinayagar temples inverse to one another are available in the same road.
