Chenganmaaleeswarar Temple Details
Chenganmaaleeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Senganmal, in the Old Mahabalipuram Road, 6KM before to Thiruporur. The primary God of this temple is known as Chenganmaaleeswarar. The Goddess here is Sri Brihannaayagi/Ambal Sri Periyanayagi Amman. In Tamil, Chenganmaal means the name of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Lord Vishnu revered Lord Shiva here and consequently the divinity got the name, Chenganmaaleeswarar and the town as, Chenganmaal(Senganmal).
Sthala Purana / Temple History:
It is believed that Lord Vishnu venerated Lord Shiva here by offering 1008 lotus. He was supplicating Lord Shiva with the most extreme dedication. Lord Shiva made a small trick by vanishing one lotus from 1008 lotuses. At the point when Lord Vishnu was going to offer the last flower, He was stunned to see that there was no more lotus left. Lord Vishnu immediately owed his eyes, as the last blossom to finish the Pooja. With pleasure at his devotion, Lord Shiva blessed Lord Vishnu with a Sudarshana Chakra, one of his weapons, that would be used to behead Jalandara Asura.
It is also said that, as this temple was established by an old Chozha King called Ko Chengannan (who constructed the Thiruvaanikkaaval temple), his regime got its name after the ruler Ko Chengannan. This temple is accepted to have been worked during the twelfth century. This temple doesn't have a Rajagopuram. There is a major lake outside the temple, on its northern side, which fills in as 'Theertham'(holy water) and is called 'Vishnu Theertham'. The sthala vriksham here is Vilvam.
