LEGEND AND HISTORY

Once Thulasi did penance to reach Lord Vishnu. Hence,  he gave a boon to her saying that he consort, Goddess Lakshmi will take birth under her lap. Then this Thulasi appeared in this place, where the temple is situated. Markandeyan was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He requested for a boon that Goddess Lakshmi should appear as her daughter and Lord Vishnu himself should appear as his son. When Markandeyan reached this place, he had an intuition of his wish and started doing penance and it lasted for thousand years. Then, Goddess Lakshmi appeared as a baby on the lap of that Thulasi. He took up the baby and raised her. When she reached her adolescence, Vishnu came in form of one old man who came to Markandeyan and asked for his daughter for marrying. Markandeyan worried about the old age of the man and said that she is very young and not even knows to cook food with proper salt content. The old man replied that it is alright for him to eat salt-less food and he wants to marry her. Markendayen was embarrassed and he prayed to Lord Vishnu, asking for a solution. Later, Markedeyan realized that the old man was none other than Lord Vishnu and he appeared with conch and Chakra in front of him. Thus, the temple got its name. The temple tank is called ‘Ahoraathra Pushkarani’ and is of great significance because of its divinity and power even during the night.

There are no clear details about the period and kings who built this temple. But, it is seen that the temple is built during the medieval Chozha period. Later, Govinda Dhikshidhar did many modifications to this temple.
