Arulmigu Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple | Thiruvelvikudi Kalyana Sundareswarar Kovil | Lord Shiva Temple In Thiruvelvikudi

மணவாழ்வு அருளும் மணவாலீஸ்வரர்!

Kalyanasundareswarar Thirukoil at Thiruvelvikudi in the banks of River Cauvery, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated around 14 kms in the way between to Mayiladuthurai and Kumbakonam in the Kuthalam taluk of Nagapattinam locale of Tamil Nadu, India. The Main deity is Kalyanasundareswarar and Goddess Parimala Sugantha Nayaki.

Sthala Puranam:

It is believed that Goddess Parvathi was born in kuttalam to Sage Baratha. As Parvathi was soulfully attached to Lord Shiva and wanted to marry him, she made a Shiva Linga out of sand and she revered the god for 16 Mondays continuosly as Mondays(SomaVara) are much auspicious for offering poojas to Lord Shiva. On 17th Monday, Lord Shiva appeared as Manavaleeswarar (Manavalan meaning Groom) and married Parvathi by knotting Ganganam (Thread tied on the wrist as the symbol of wedding) after taking bath in the temple tank. Having Brahma as priest and all other deities witnessed, the marriage took place at this shrine. As the Yagna/Homam was performed here, this spot came to be called Thiruvelvikudi.( Velvi meaning Homam). And the temple tank to be called as  Gouthuga Bandana Theertham.

Thiruvelvikudi is the origin of Arthanareeswarar history where Lord Shiva dedicated his equal half of the body to Goddess Parvathi. This temple was mentioned in Thevaram for its sacredness and praises by Sundarar and Sambanthar.

Sthala Magimai :

This is one of the important temples where those confronting delays in marriage, gather. As the God Himself got married here, He favors His devotees to get married through his blessing by removing all the karma which is abducting the marriage. For this reason, on all Mondays and the full moon days (Pournami) special homam is performed between 10 am and 4 pm. The individuals who wish to partake in the homam, a kangana (string) is tied on the boy or young lady's wrist in front of the Ambal's Shrine. This temple is explicitly proposed for the people who are facing delay in marriage over 30 age.

When Sundarar was sicked with some medical problems, God Shiva advised him to take bath in the temple tank here and perform pooja. Sundarar was totally recovered of his concern when he did as told. Also, Agasthyar got relieved from his sin( brahmahathi dosham) here, for having caused the death of asura Vathapi.
