This is one of the 24 significant temples for Lord Dakshinamoorthy

The Presiding deities are God Sri Satchinatheswarar / Sri Punnaivana Nathar and Goddess Sri Karumpadu Solliammai / Sri Ishuvaani.

This shrine'sBrahma Theertham is river Manniyaru and Saptha Sagara Koobam (well) and Sthala Vriksham (Sacred Tree) is Punnai tree

Sthala Purana:

On the finish of each "yuga", tremendous flood will take place which destroys all living creatures on the earth. This is known as the "Pralayam". During the finish of the "Krutha yuga", on the guidance of Lord Shiva, Vinayakar of this temple saved this spot by redirecting the water of seven oceans into this temple's well. This well is known as the "Saptha Sagara Koobam" ("seven ocean well") and it is situated on the eastern bank of this temple's tank. Thus the Vinayakar here is named as "Pralayam Katha Vinayakar". This spot gets the name Thiru Purambayam as it was not influenced by the Pralayam ("puram" signifies exception and "payas" signifies water in Tamil).

The Vinayakar Icon in this temple has been made by Lord Varuna (the divine force of water) utilizing froth and shells from the ocean. No abhisheka is performed to this Vinayakar besides on the Vinayaka Chathurthi day. On this day, Abhishek is performed to him for the whole night with honey and All the poured honey gets completely assimilated.

Pralayam Katha Vinayagar

Another history took place in the 64th "Thiruvilaiyadal" of Lord Shiva. It is accepted that a finance manager (a Chettiar) from Kaveripoom Pattinam (Poompuhar) had a little girl named Rathnavalli. He needed to wed her to his nephew who lived in Madurai. He became sick and called his nephew to Poompuhar and gave him Rathnavalli's hand in marriage prior to dying from his ailment. The kid chose to return to Madurai with the young lady and coming, they stayed the night in this temple. Tragically, he died due to a snake bite. Rathnavalli cried and appealed to Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva resurrected him and got them married under a Vanni tree in this temple. Since there was nobody else present, the wedding occurred within the sight of lifeless things like this temple's kitchen, its well, and the Vanni tree.

Later Rathnavalli's marriage was tested by the money manager's first spouse in Madurai. To show evidence of the wedding, Lord Shiva went to Madurai's Sri Sundareswarar temple alongside the things that had seen the marriage - the kitchen, the well, and the Vanni tree from Thiruppurambayam. Thus the Lord here is lauded as "Sri Satchinathar" (as he witnessed).

Some other Purana's are

  • Wood shaper (a "Pulainjan") from the close-by town Govandhaputhur, who provided firewoods to this shrine got darshan of Lord Shiva (as Lord Dakshinamurthy).
  • Lord Haridwajan of the Magada realm had experienced a sickness called "Muyalagan" because of a revile by Sage Durvasa. He visited numerous Shiva temples, lastly relieved after worshipping Lord Shiva of this shrine.
  • It is believed that Lord Brahma, Sukreev, Sages Agasthiyar, Dhronachary, Viswamithrar, and Sanakathi Rishis (four) have revered the Lord here.
